RESOURCES FOR MINISTRY TO AND WITH PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

Last Modified August 31, 1998

This page is designed to provide information about the Disabled-Ministry list and other resources related to ministry to, with, and by people with disabilities. It was designed by Sarah Blake initially for use by members of the list and has been converted into a Web page in the hope that people who are not members of the list may also benefit from the information provided.

This page has been divided into smaller pages due to the amount of information present to make loading time faster. I hope this is helpful.

1 PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND OF THE LIST

1.1 Nature of Membership

Disabled-Ministry is a list where people with disabilities, ministers, and other interested people can come together to discuss relevant issues.

1.2 Activity and Topics

Appropriate topics include but are certainly not limited to the following:

2 LIST COMMANDS AND ARCHIVES

2.1 Subscribing and Unsubscribing

There are two ways to subscribe to this list. Most people are subscribed to the list so that each message comes individually. It is also possible to subscribe to the list as a digest. In this method, you will receive one piece of mail every so often containing several postings to the list. Digests are generated at 5:00 AM and 5:00 PM and also when the content reaches 45 KB or 30 messages, whichever occurs first.

To subscribe, send a blank message to the address which corresponds to the subscription method you prefer:

Disabled-Ministry-subscribe for individual postings

Disabled-Ministry-digest-subscribe@associate.com for digest format

To unsubscribe, you must send a blank message to the appropriate address:

Disabled-Ministry-unsubscribe@associate.com if you are subscribed and receiving individual messages Disabled-Ministry-digest-unsubscribe@associate.com if you are subscribed and receiving messages in digest format.

Subscriptions to this list are managed by the EZML program and can only be processed if received via one of the addresses specified above. Please do not send requests to be unsubscribed to the list. List subscribers have no control over who gets list mail.

2.2 Posting to the List

All posts to the list should be sent to Disabled-Ministry@associate.com regardless of how you are subscribed to the list. Please make every effort to ensure that your post is clear and readable by taking time to plan what you are going to say. This will ensure that other members have an accurate understanding of your point of view and can benefit from your opinions or get you the kind of information you need, whichever the case may be.

When posting to the list, please try to make your subject line as descriptive as possible of what you will be discussing in your subject. If you are replying to a post but find that the content of your reply differs from that of the original post, please modify the subject line. Subscribers who receive individual messages need to be able to filter out messages which are not of interest using the subject lines.

When replying to someone else's post, please try to determine whether your reply will benefit the list as a whole or is intended specifically for the original poster. If the reply is intended specifically for the original poster, please remove the list address from the reply. This will cut down on unnecessary mail for other subscribers. There is nothing inherently wrong with high mail volume. The mail just needs to be relevant to more than one subscriber.

Please try to refrain from quoting entire messages. Quoting a small piece of a message to which you are referring is fine; however, excessive quoting increases the size of the digests unnecessarily and is usually not necessary.

Please do not forward postings from this list without the permission of the author. Likewise, please do not place postings on your Web page unless you have obtained the permission of the author and have removed all identifying information from the post.

Finally, please refrain from forwarding posts from other sources to the list unless they are directly related to the purpose of the list. Discussion of topics broadly related to the Christian faith, life of the church, or living with a disability are acceptable. List members enjoy discussing their personal experiences and may find it helpful to know what others on the list are doing. The purpose of this guideline is to ensure that unrelated postings from outside sources do not begin to fill up the list.

2.3 Archives

There are several ways to get archives of previous posts to the lists.

To receive copies of messages in chronological order, send mail to:

Disabled-Ministry-get.1_50@associate.com

Substitute the numbers 1 and 50 with appropriate message numbers. Message 1 is the first post ever made to the list. The numbers in the address must not exceed a range of 50, as a maximum of 50 messages can be sent in return. Thus, it is not possible to send a message to:

Disabled-Ministry-get.1_51@associate.com

A listing of subjects may also be retrieved. For this listing, a maximum of 2000 subjects may be returned. It is possible, therefore, to send a message to:

Disabled-Ministry-index.1_2000@associate.com

This message would cause the EZML program to return to you a listing of the subject lines of messages 1 through 2000. If you browse this list and find that you are interested in a message (for example, message number 219), you can retrieve this message and all messages in the same thread by sending mail to:
