HOW THE SURVIVORS SURVIVE: THE HURRICANE EXPERIENCE OF A PERSON WITH DISABILITIES

by Sarah J. Blake
September 2, 2005

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, I began to feel that it is important for people with disabilities to share their experiences of surviving and coping with hurricanes--both to help each other feel less alone and to help other people understand the needs of people with disabilities who live in hurricane-prone areas. America is often a very kind society; but we can also be a very selfish society, expecting people to look out for themselves and stigmatizing those who are poor or in failing health.

I have put this site together to share my story and also to share resources that may be helpful. If you have a story to share and need space, please send me an email and let me know that you would like to share your story on the site. I do not publish stories without permission, so if you want your story posted please specify it in your email. If you would like to suggest a link, please send it along in an email as well.
