What does it mean to have a shattered self?
It means that never again will I take for granted the way a flower smells;
For the children within glory in its fragrance.
It means that never will I count as insignificant a skinned knee;
For the children within remember those injuries and many worse,
And the children within know the pain of having their injuries overlooked.
It means that never will I overlook the accomplishments of another person;
For the children and teens know the need for shared celebration and praise.
It means that never will I ignore the pain of a teenager's lost love;
For the teenagers within know the pain of rejection and the fear of trying again.
It means that never will I take for granted my own accomplishments; For all of the fragments of myself long for those events about which to rejoice.
It means that every memory is at my disposal if my collective self chooses to remember;
For my fragmented selves hold vivid and accurate memories of things both good and bad.
It means that I am versatile and gifted;
For each of my fragments holds unique abilities and strengths.
It means that there is hope for my life;
For if there are pieces, then they can be put together again.
